Custom Silicone Moulding: What to Prepare Before You Request a Quote

Why preparation pays

Custom silicone parts — plugs, grommets, sleeves, tubes, O-rings, pads and sealing strips — are moulded to a drawing or reverse-engineered from a working sample. The quality of the inquiry determines how quickly a supplier can respond and how close the first quotation is to the final part.

The preparation checklist

Drawings and dimensions. A 2D drawing with dimensions and tolerances is ideal. A dimensioned sketch plus a reference photo is often enough to begin a feasibility review.

A sample part. If a current part works, send it. Measuring a physical sample gives the supplier the wall thickness, geometry and hardness reference directly.

Application description. What the part does, where it sits, what moves against it, and what it must keep out. This is what allows material and hardness to be proposed sensibly.

Hardness expectation. Shore hardness if known; otherwise describe the feel and the function, such as soft, firm or extra firm.

Exposure conditions. Heat, chemicals, cleaning routines, outdoor UV or food-contact conditions. Documentation requirements should be stated up front if they apply.

Volume and pack format. An annual volume estimate, first-order quantity, and whether parts ship in bulk bags, kits or labelled boxes.

How the review proceeds

The supplier checks mouldability: wall thickness, undercuts, parting line, draft and whether the stated tolerances are achievable. Points that cannot be met as drawn should be raised before quoting. A quotation normally separates one-time tooling cost from part cost, and states the material, hardness and colour assumptions behind it.

Samples are the decision point. Fit them on the real assembly, confirm the critical dimensions and the hardness feel, and test sealing behaviour under the actual closing force before approving volume production.

Keep a reference specification

Once approved, record the drawing revision, material grade, hardness, colour and packaging. That reference is what keeps later batches consistent, and it resolves most questions before they become disputes.
