Four decisions, in order

1. What is the sealing job? Machine access door, electrical cabinet, panel joint, pipeline flange, or a moving cover. Each has a different tolerance for closing force and wear.

2. What is being excluded? Dust, water spray, washdown liquid, oil mist, hot air, vibration or noise. The media determines the material family.

3. How is the joint built? Bolted flange, sliding cover, hinge, or friction channel. The joint geometry limits which cross-sections can work.

4. How much compression is available? The closed gap and the force available to close it decide whether a solid profile or a hollow bulb profile is appropriate.

Cross-section families in practice

Solid round and square strips resist deformation well in fixed joints but need more closing force. D-section, P-section and hollow bulb profiles take less force and suit hinged doors and lightweight covers that cycle open and closed. U-channel edge seals combine edge protection with sealing, and flat gasket strips suit straight flanged joints.

Do not overlook the fixing method

A strip that seals but falls off during assembly is not a solution. Options include adhesive backing for suitable substrates, push-in or clip-in channels, friction retention in a groove, and mechanical clamping in a flange. On many projects the fixing method decides the profile rather than the other way around.

Standard strips versus custom profiles

Standard strip families cover straightforward door and cabinet joints. Custom profiles become worthwhile when the housing geometry is fixed, when two functions must be combined — sealing plus edge protection, for example — or when assembly time on a manual line needs to be reduced.
