Masking is a specification problem

Powder coating, wet painting, electroplating and similar finishing steps all need certain features protected: threaded holes, bores, blind holes, stud ends and connector faces. Silicone tapered plugs are widely used for this because they wedge into a range of hole sizes along their length and release cleanly after curing. The details that decide the part

Hole geometry. Diameter at the entry, depth, and whether the hole is straight, tapered or threaded. A threaded hole takes a different masking approach from a plain bore.

Process conditions. The coating type, any pretreatment chemistry, and the curing profile the plug will be exposed to. Heat resistance should be matched to the actual process rather than assumed.

Removal method. Hand pull, tool-assisted, or automated extraction. This drives whether a plain tapered plug or a pull-style plug with a grip stem is the better fit.

Pack format. Assortment kits by size range, single sizes in bulk, or labelled boxes for a maintenance store. Kit layout and labels can be reviewed against the sizes a line actually uses.

Coated parts are often inspected for plug removal before they leave the line. Using colour to distinguish sizes makes a missing or wrong-sized plug obvious at a glance, which is a practical quality aid on manual lines.
