Cable Grommets and Wire Seals: Sizing Notes for Equipment Builders

A three-way fit

A grommet has to fit the panel, the cable and the environment at the same time. Get any one of the three wrong and the result is chafing, water ingress, or a part that pops out on the assembly line.

Four inputs worth measuring first

Panel hole diameter and thickness. Measure the produced hole, not the drawing's nominal dimension. The grommet groove must sit against the sheet only where the sheet actually is.

Cable or bundle diameter. Where a bundle passes through, give the minimum and maximum size. A grommet sized for the minimum will be over-stretched at the maximum.

Mounting style. Grooved, flanged, push-in or snap-in. The mounting method and the panel thickness must agree.

Exposure. Indoor cabinet, outdoor enclosure, washdown area or motor housing. This determines whether a silicone grade or a general-purpose rubber grade is the sensible starting point.

Matching the part to the job

Not every hole carries a cable. Unused or reserved holes are usually closed with a blanking grommet that also protects the sheet edge. Cables that pass through without a sealing requirement can use an open grommet, while entries that must be closed around a cable or tube call for a wire seal or sealing plug. Panel builders frequently order all three together, which is why consistent sizing across the family saves real assembly time.

Custom and repeat supply

Where a panel geometry is fixed, a custom moulded grommet can be reviewed from a drawing or a sample. For repeat orders, agree the specification once — hole range, cable range, material, hardness, colour, pack format — so every later delivery is checked against the same reference.
