Automotive body, chassis and powertrain components are protected against corrosion by cathodic electrodeposition coating, commonly called E-coating. In a typical line, racked assemblies are dipped into an electrocoat bath and then cured in an oven that reaches 180-200 degrees Celsius. Every threaded hole, stud, blind bore, machined face and weld nut that must stay conductive, paint-free or dimensionally clean has to be masked before it enters the bath. Because masking plugs are removed by hand after curing and consumed in very high volumes, they directly influence takt time, rework rate and line uptime.
Dongguan Yunze Silicone Products Co., Ltd. supplies high-temperature silicone masking plugs, caps and tapered stoppers to Tier 1 and Tier 2 automotive suppliers operating high-throughput E-coating and powder-coating lines.
A European Tier 1 chassis supplier contacted Yunze after repeated failures with generic silicone plugs on a 200 °C electrocoat curing line. The team needed to mask M8 and M10 weld nuts plus several 12 mm blind bores on stamped steel brackets. Their existing plugs failed in four ways:
Yunze engineers reviewed the fixture drawings and masking map, then proposed a platinum-cured (addition-cure) high-consistency silicone compound (VMQ) rated for continuous service from -60 to 250 degrees Celsius, with short-term excursions to 300 degrees Celsius. Platinum curing produces no peroxide by-products, so the plugs do not bloom, discolour or leave residue on coated surfaces.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Material | Platinum-cured VMQ silicone, natural base |
| Hardness | 60 ± 5 Shore A |
| Continuous service temperature | -60 °C to +250 °C |
| Short-term peak | +300 °C (up to 30 min) |
| Tensile strength | ≥ 7.5 MPa |
| Elongation at break | ≥ 300 % |
| Compression set (22 h / 175 °C) | ≤ 20 % |
| Masked bore range | M6 to M20 / 8-30 mm blind bores |
| Molding process | Compression molding, flash-free tooling |
| Standard colours | Orange, black, red, natural |
After a 30-day line trial with 20,000 plugs, the customer reported measurable gains:
Q: What is the maximum temperature for your silicone masking plugs?
A: Standard platinum-cured plugs handle 250 °C continuous, with 300 °C short-term peaks, which covers E-coat curing ovens and most powder-coat reflow stages.
Q: Can plugs be reused across multiple coating cycles?
A: Yes. Automotive customers typically reuse plugs 50-100 cycles depending on cure temperature and handling. Platinum-cured silicone resists hardening far better than peroxide-cured grades.
Q: Do you make custom sizes and shapes from our drawings?
A: Yes. Send the bore CAD or a physical sample, and Yunze will build flash-free tooling and first-article samples, usually within 7-12 days.
